Google, the well known internet service provider, is going all out to expand its business. It has announced the launch of a new social networking site, Google Buzz. This has been followed by another announcement about its ambitious plan of providing up to 1 GB broadband speeds with the laying of a high-speed fibre optic network.

This service will be started in the United States where, initially, a small fibre optic network will be laid to provide connections to small communities totalling to 50,000 people. If this initiative is successful, the company plans to expand so as to serve 500,000 people. Then the service will to Europe and will be provided in the UK.

With the expansion in broadband usage all over the world, the main concern is that of slow downloading and uploading speeds. Thus, the expectation is that this 1 GB service will become popular with the users because with such high speeds one can enjoy services that are bandwidth sensitive and also commence services that have not yet been imagined.

To attract more customers Google has promised services that will not be discriminatory in nature. This open-access type of service will benefit both the customers and the service providers. The users will enjoy competitive pricing, whereas the service providers will ensure optimum utilisation of the existing networks. Google will be able to lay fibre optic connections to homes without the need of paying for expensive installations.

Sensing a good business opportunity BT has already announced its intention to let Google use its infrastructure. Market predictions are that this trend will benefit both Google and other internet service providers.
